Philosophy of Education
Changing society
through a quality education for all people is a movement that I feel is the
most realistic way to change the way status functions in the United
States. Being an educator is
an opportunity to personally connect with people and guide them towards
improving themselves and the world around them. Being
an outstanding educator in the United States is not simply teaching core
subjects, but also being an activist for social justice in the classroom and
connecting students to the world around them.
Social justice allows for students to not only learn about complex issues in the world, but also learn skills like compromise, taking on various perspectives, and resolving issues creatively. Students can also take on projects in their own communities and see how the subjects they study like math or reading, are relevant in their world. I want to be a teacher that takes subject matter and brings it to life for my students by expanding our classroom to the community and world.
Teaching should engage students in a way that makes them activists in their own classrooms. I want students to not only feel impassioned by subjects taught in our classroom, but also form their own opinions about topics. I want to create an environment that allows for students to understand that their opinions are neither right nor wrong, but need to be supported by information and beliefs. Also, I would like for my students to participate in global conversations about relevant topics. Students should feel that their opinions are valid not only in the classroom, but among universal audiences. I feel that students should be given an educational environment that gives them the confidence to express themselves outside the classroom. Hopefully, it will engage students in lifelong learning and participation in the world around them.
Students should be given access to core subject knowledge, but also lessons on empathy, responsibility, and kindness. Educators have the responsibility to model behavior that garners respect and teach children that behavior can influence the kind of opportunities they will have. I want to teach students how to take care of their own materials and responsibilities, whether that is a classroom job or their nightly homework. These life skills are necessary for success and are not innate. Students must be taught strategies for success. Students can understand material completely, but they must understand that is not going to give them the results they want if they neglect their responsibilities. I think that teaching students to be empathic and kind in my classroom will translate into a more harmonious classroom and hopefully will transcend into their lives outside school. Though a teacher is responsible for core subjects, I want to also instill students with social skills that will set them up for success the rest of their lives.
Education should be a tool that allows for any child to succeed in the United States. I feel that dedicated teachers, no matter their resources, can make a positive change for a child. I want to be a teacher that dedicates herself to the personal strengths of each child and motivates each child with those strengths. I have a lot to learn about being an educator, but from what I have seen, it is entirely possible to create a classroom that motivates students to be passionate and feel connected to the world. I think that if I continue to view myself as a learner, I can continue to think of creative new ways to address diverse student populations and challenges that come my way. Being an educator is a challenge, but one that I feel when met with creativity and passion can be fulfilling and life altering for teachers and students alike.
